[ for the history lesson and also the pint of beer, as he cups it with both hands, staring at the liquid for a moment or two. it looks fine, but cheap beer is cheap beer. and, in this instance, free beer, seeing as steve paid for it. ]

Did you study Viking history on the side, in the between fighting the Nazis and leading the Avengers?

[ as he takes a drink of the (indeed cheap) beer. ]

Because I can think of about fifty other things I would rather be doing.

[captain_america]

[ He rolls his eyes at the name. ]

I was a sick kid. Reading didn't require getting out of bed and the library had free books.

[ He takes a sip of his own beer, mulling something over before opening his mouth again.]

There's something I need to tell you.

[privatizes]

[ the thought of steve being a sick kid is such a foreign concept. he's their proverbial tank. tony can't even really imagine him with a cold.

but at the last part, tony pauses in his drink before setting it back down at the table, meeting steve with a level-stare. ]

Nothing good ever comes after that statement, especially from you.

[ and he leans back in his chair, folding his arms. ]

What's up?

It’s not bad.

[ Well, not really. He just thinks Tony should know this so he’s not caught off guard. Steve learned his lesson in keeping things from Tony. ]

Bucky is here.

[ It’s been so many years and so much has happened but he still wants to give Tony the heads up. Especially since. ]

He’s from the train- he. He hasn’t become the Winter Soldier yet.

[privatizes]

[ his fingers tighten, on his forearms, and tony's lips press into a thin line. but those are really the only visible tells of the effect of the information... and really, it's not the bucky thing.

tony has long since made his peace with the idea that bucky barnes is a victim in all of this. and while he may not agree with it, he knows that it's a fact. and tony lets that ruminate for a moment before he sighs, and his eyes avert to look at the door of the restaurant. tense, and uncomfortable, because bucky (or, rather, tony and steve's ardent disagreement over how to deal with bucky) was what ruined the avengers.

Does he know?

[ finally, his eyes still on the door of the restaurant. ]

Did you tell him what happens, or is he still in the dark?

[ He lets Tony work it out, sipping his beer and watching him. It’s a touchy subject- it will always be a touchy subject. The whole mess in Siberia, lying to Tony about his parents, their fight. There isn’t a lot he regrets, but he regrets not telling Tony, not trusting him and himself. A lot could have been avoided if they had just talked. It’s not a mistake Steve wants to make again, which is why he’s telling him now.

Steve shakes his head. ]

No.

[ and Steve still isn’t sure if that was the right decision. ]

He thinks he died- I don’t. I don’t know how to tell him. I don’t know if I should tell him.
